Hot Tips, Cool Resources

January 2020

Hi all,

It's the end of the month and so it's time for some Hot Tips & Cool Resources...but first...

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

Wow! here we are in 2020!

January has been a great month for me. It's been awesome to have an extended break - but I am equally excited to get back to doing what I love now the year is underway...

How has your holiday season been? I hope it's brought the right balance of joy and learning...and most of all I hope you and your family have stayed safe throughout the worst Aussie bushfire season ever. Finally, I hope rain has been bucketing down in your region.

🎾🎾🎾

I love summer, in part because I am a huge fan of the game of tennis. Having played it since I was a young child, I have always had a passion for it.

Over the past month I have watched a fair bit of tennis, and I have been particularly impressed with the mindset shift that has happened in a young Aussie star named Nick Kyrgios.

The is no doubt Nick has divided the nation - who either seem to love or hate him. His raw talent and incredible skill literally blows people's minds - but his attitude and effort have often been sub-par. Frequent meltdowns, temper tantrums, disrespectful remarks about other players...to say his attitude sucked would be an understatement.

It was painful to watch, especially as a mindset coach, who understood how much could change in this young man's life if he could just find the switch and shift gears into a success mindset.

Well, to everyone's admiration - that's exactly what has unfolded over the past few weeks. And it took the country burning for it to happen...

Nick's home town of Canberra has had some of the worst air quality in the world due to smoke from fires...and that had a visible impact on the young athlete, bringing him to tears in one interview. He is a big hearted chap, and so he was moved to help in any way he could. With one Tweet he started a movement (Aces for Bushfires) that has now raised millions and millions of dollars in just a few weeks.

I am joining Nick and pledging $$ for every ace he serves. If you want to add to the more than 5-million already raised, then make a pledge here: Aces for Bushfires

Now, I think contributing to others is what makes Nick tick - and since his Tweet he has had a radical shift of mindset. He has been taking himself and his tennis more seriously, making an effort, showing up and giving 150% instead of 50%. He has been winning matches, and carried his Aussie team mates to the semi-final of the ATP cup.

Not only that - his connection to other players has changed. Even Rafael Nadal, who had lost all respect for Nick, has said he has been impressed with the effort Nick has made since the start of 2020.

Over the past few weeks, Nick has provided a powerful case study of how changing your mindset can turn your whole life around - and he's a excellent example of what it looks like to shift from a Fixed to a Growth Mindset...

...and ironically, this topic is exactly what I am serving up to you in this months Hot Tips article...

WHO I'M QUOTING

Kobe Bryant was a worldwide sporting icon who died tragically this week in a helicopter accident. His 13 yo daughter Gianna also died in the accident, as did 7 other people.

Kobe was a supreme athlete and a king of mindset, and he credited his incredible success to his mentality. He also taught his daughter to have an amazing mindset.

As a tribute to him, his daughter and all those that died tragically last Sunday, let's reflect on what Kobe said about mindset:

“The mindset isn’t about seeking a result—it’s more about the process of getting to that result. It’s about the journey and the approach. It’s a way of life. I do think that it’s important, in all endeavors, to have that mentality.”

BOOK I'M DEVOURING

One book I have been reading and re-reading all summer:

Mindset by Carol Dweck *

World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea - the power of our mindset.

Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success - but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardise success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals-personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.
